Here is a brief list of what I feel are the must-have applications (apps) for your iPod Touch or iPhone:

1. Installer. This is the application you get when you jailbreak, or unlock your device. From the Installer you can simply browse through collections of programs and downlaod them onto your iPod Touch or iPhone with the tap of your finger.

2. Apple Mail/Google Maps. If you are an iPod Touch user, the first two programs you need to get onto your iPod are Mail and Google Maps. These are quite simple to install using the Installer program, make sure you install the packages in order as described in the Installer App.

3. iSolitare, iBlackJack and iSlots. These three games have proven to be the most fun, in my opinion and can all be easily installed using the Installer App, found under the “Games” category. Also check out the game called “Lights Out”.

4. To Do List. This application is just like it sounds, it is a simple To-Do list. I also installed this using the Jailbreak installer application.

5. SpringBoard, SummerBoard, and Customize. These three applications all work together to cusotmize your iPhone or iPod Touch. They allow you to control your wallpaper, and customize your application icons and the order which they appear on your device. You can also add themes to your device, to easily change the look or revert it to the original factory style.

Enjoy!

iPhone not available in your area? Why not grab an iPod Touch and unlock it instead. That’s right. The iPod Touch can do almost everything the iPhone can, with the exception of voice chat…. but that may change with VOIP (voice over IP).

You can buy an iPhone for $299.00 CAD at Best Buy of Future Shop, and in about 20 minutes you can unlock it (or “JailBreak” it). By doing this, your iPod can now handle your e-mail with the Apple Mail application, play loads of games, use google maps, and much much more. Check back shortly for a comprehensive guide on unlocking the iPod Touch and loading it with iPhone applications.

News that Apple was talking with China’s largest mobile carrier, China Mobile, sent apple’s stock soaring 11.2% this afternoon [Tuesday]. An executive from China Mobile said that they had not made any concrete progress with Apple yet, but noted that both companies hope to bring the iPhone to the world’s largest developing market as soon as possible.

Many analysts say that the prospect of the iPhone entering the Chinese market yields endless possibilities for the company. The potential market size there is huge, and would be equivalent to another AT&T. The increase is stock price is probably warranted given the potential for Apple in the Chinese market, although many feel the large jump in share price wasn’t justified.

By now, I’m sure everyone has heard about google’s new phone although we haven’t yet written a full story on it here at iPhoneNews.ca. Google’s phone will be linux based, unlike the Apple iPhone which runs off Apple’s propritary software. The question that many are asking is how secure will the google phone be given that it is based on open source software?

Obviously nothing can be perfect, we have already seen many wireless security issues with Apple’s iPhone. A large percentage of the phones in Japan are Linux based, and security problems have been minimized. Security flaws can continue to be minimized as long as developers look at security as something that is mandatory and not something that is an option.

iTunes 7.5 was recently release and some iPhone users have been skeptikal about updating their phone. Sources have indicated that upgrading to iTunes 7.5 should not cause any problems, including with third party applications like iToner and Independence.

Apple iPhone News
The launch of the Apple iPhone in Europe this week is expected to put a lot of pressure on Rogers Wireless here in Canada. Right now, the data rates for wireless phones with Rogers are ridiculous. It costs a small fortune to get a reasonable amount of data, and unlimited data packages are not available.

European plans will cost roughly $70 Canadian for unlmited data. A plan similar to this in Canada will cost around $150.00. Canadain data rates will need to fall if the iPhone is to be a success.

“Apple clearly has a schedule and a plan for their rollout on a worldwide basis,” said Robert Bruce, president of Rogers’ wireless division, early last week.

There are rumors we could see the iPhone in Canada with Rogers very soon, but until we see Rogers data rates drop this won’t happen.

Here is what CTV news in Canada had to say on this issue with the Apple iPhone:

Environmental watchdog group Greenpeace International has launched an aggressive campaign warning consumers of hazardous chemicals used in Apple’s wildly popular iPhone.

Scientists at the Greenpeace Research Laboratories in Britain found iPhones analyzed in their labs tested positive for reactive brominated flame retardants and phthalates plasticisers.

Greenpeace says some of the chemicals are labeled in Europe as “toxic to reproduction” and interfere with sexual reproduction in mammals.

“Phthalate is a chemical that is hormone destructive, therefore it will affect the immune system and the reproductive system,” Greenpeace International spokesperson Zeina Alhajj told CTV Newsnet on Tuesday from Amsterdam.

None of the four phthalates found in the study are permitted for use in components of toys or childcare articles sold in Europe.

While iPhones themselves are not harmful, Alhajj cautioned that PVC chemicals may become hazardous, depending on how consumers use the product.

Waterloo-based Research in Motion (RIM) has just launched the new BlackBerry 8820, a dual-mode cell phone that is able to switch between cellular and WiFi networks to make calls and surf the web. The blackberry 8820 will be available through AT&T later this summer. The new BlackBerry will feature a full QWERTY keyboard, a nicely sized 320 x 240 pixel display and a trackball navigation system as seen in the BlackBerry Pearl.

Pricing has not yet been announced for the 8820. Previously, AT&T has offered some BlackBerry devices for as low as US$50, plus a monthly voice and data service plan. It is not likely that the 8820 will be so cheap.

The 8820 will include built-in GPS support, a multi-media player for videos and music, and an expandable memory slot for micromemory cards in sizes up to 32GB, RIM said in a statement. The battery is also removable (user-replaceable), according to the Waterloo, Ontario-based vendor.

The new smart phone switches “seamlessly” between EDGE, GPRS and GSM networks and 802.11a/b/g Wi-Fi, according to RIM. The BlackBerry 8820 can operate with the BlackBerry Internet Service, allowing you to manage up to 10 personal and business e-mail accounts, or with BlackBerry Enterprise Server installed inside a user’s business, which provides IT administration ability for Lotus Domino, Microsoft Exchange and Novell Groupwise systems.

Many new iPhone owners are searching far and wide for some sort of protection policy for their new baby, *just in case*. Apparently the iPhone is not eligible for insurance through AT&T’s insurance providers; not surprising. A plausible option would be for one to add the iPhone onto your homeowner’s insurance policy.

Here are two other viable options to protect your Apple iPhone. Note: iPhoneNews.ca is not affiliated with Apple Inc of SquareTrade and we are not necessarily endorsing either option, just “putting it out there”.

Option 1: An AppleCare Warranty from Apple.

Apple Inc will be offering an AppleCare extended warranty for the iPhone in July. The iPhone AppleCare plan will essentially extend the regular 90 day warranty for an additional year. Cost? Around $70. This iPhone warranty plan is both simple and safe, but it won’t cover any accidental “incidents” involving your iPhone. That means you are on your own for any problems that are not manufacturers defects or simple software glitches; so no replacement if you drop your iPhone while getting onto the subway.

Option 2: A SquareTrade CarePlan.

SquareTrade has been in business since 1999. Their warranties are financially backed by an A rated insurer and they are the leading provider of extended warranties on eBay. SquareTrade also has an online management system for you to manage your warranty.
They have a new basic CarePlan for the iPhone. Cost? 10% of item price, so $49.99 - $59.99 depending on which iPhone you have purchased from Apple. The coverage is equivalent to what you get with the AppleCare warranty. They say that if something does happen to your iPhone, they will either fix it, or pay you the full $499-$599 replacement value for the iPhone. SquareTrade also guarantees that replacements/repairs will be conducted within 5 days.

SquareTrade will also be providing an enhanced CarePlan with accidental damage coverage (something that an AppleCare warranty doesn’t offer) in the near future. This WILL cover you if you drop your iPhone. You can check their website in the coming weeks to purchase this plan.
Here is a link to the SquareTrade warranty page.

Note: Neither of these coverage plans will cover losing the iPhone, so keep your eyes on it at all times - Not that you wouldn’t be doing that anyways!
